Ah. . . the Weekend!

I look forward to the weekends primarily because it’s two days away from work and a chance to spend time with the family.  I enjoy going to church on Sunday mornings and having the chance to be revitalized for another week.  I frequently find that they’re way too short, though!  Saturday and Sunday are the only days I have to clean the house (no energy during the week), do the laundry (maybe the ironing, if I’m lucky), and grocery shop (if necessary but only go every other week).  In the past I’ve made a list and then everyone chooses a job and gets it done.  Is it done to my specifications?  Well, not exactly but some day it will be.  It gives the children a chance to take ownership in something they can do for the family/house and it definitely helps me out!  Does anyone have any suggestions in  how to make this better?  I’d love to hear from you!

Deb – One technique my Mom used when we were growing up was she had a “pay scale” attached to each chore. So, depending on the chore, I could make some money to help feed my candy addiction. For example, if I dusted the living room, I might make ten cents. If I mopped the kitchen, that might bring in 25 to 50 cents. I was able to choose what chores I wanted and work as much as I wanted. I was motivated by how much money I would make. I don’t remember this method always being the way we did chores, but It does stand out in my mind as one that I, as a kid, enjoyed. Of course with today’s kids and their concept of money, nickels and dimes might not be motivation enough.

Thanks, Clay! Ken remembers the chores with the pay scale as well although he can’t remember how much he got paid for which chore. That sounds like a neat idea although you’re probably right that the nickels and dimes might not be enough motivation!
